Week 4 Discussion Question

Howie decides to make a petition for the students to sign in the hopes that he can save Miss Gossim's job. The problem Howie faces though is that he promised her he wouldn't tell anyone about what is going on in her life. Howie ultimately decides that he has to do something by saying, "I couldn't do nothing for my pop, or Denny's dad, but I could do something for Miss Gossim...doing something was better than doing nothing." Do you agree with Howie's decision to write the petition, why or why not? Why do you think he really did it, even though he knew he was breaking a promise? Miss Gossim says to Howie, "Please, please, please don't try to help me again." Do you think Howie will listen, why or why not? Make sure to support your thinking with examples from the book!

  1. I don’t really agree with Howie doing the petition because he has already tried to help Miss Gossim enough and after MIss Gossim read the petition, she was really sad and she didn’t want Howie to help her anymore but she did, on her last day, she wants Howie to get a 100% on his math test and she said that, that will make her really happy on her last day.
I think Howie really did it, even though he knew he was breaking a promise because he just wanted to try to help Miss Gossim some more before she leaves on Monday and he knew his was breaking a promise from him and MIss Gossim, making a promise from Howie, and then breaking the promise because of the petition that he did.
I probably think Howie will listen to MIss Gossim because he probably will study and will try to get a 100% on his math test to make MIss Gossim really happy on her last day. I also think Howie will listen to MIss Gossim because she wants Howie to get a 100% on his math test to make Miss Gossim really happy on her last day before she has to leave.

    1. I disagree Rory I think Howie should’ve because he wants to save Miss Gossim and he thinks it is unfair that Miss Gossim has to get fired when she is expecting and Howie has a crush on her and wants to keep her as his teacher.

    2. Well Ethan, you just copied the part that Howie will save Miss Gossim form the back of the book. And what do you mean by the word should've?

  2. I agree with the decision that Howie made because he wants to save his teacher and will do anything to do it. If my teacher was going to get fired I would say it is not her fault and I would try to get kids to sign a petition to save my teacher so I could have a good teacher to teach me. I think he did it because he wanted to have a good teacher and he had a crush on Miss Gossim and he wanted to see her more often. I don’t think Howie will not listen and I think that because he already did do something he was told not to do and he did it. I think that because he was told not to let anyone know but then he did the opposite because he wanted to save Miss Gossim.

    1. Ethan, I disagree with you, I don’t think that it was wise to write a petition. I thought that it was a 90% chance that it would fail and a 10% chance that it would work. And I was correct.

    2. Ethan I totally agree. We practically said the same thing. You and I are the only ones who said it was a good idea, and I think it is right. Good job

    3. Joel's Mom's comment.
I disagree with Howie's decision to write the petition. He broke his promise that he wouldn't say anything to anyone. Now Ms. Gossim can't trust Howie. I think Howie wrote the petition because he likes Ms. Gossim so much he didn't think of the consequences that would come from breaking her trust. I don't think Howie will listen and not try to help Ms. Gossim again. I don't think he can help himself. He likes her too much to not try and help her.

  3. I don’t agree with the decision to make a petition because I would hate to see my favorite teacher sad or mad at me. But I understand that he wrote the petition because he thought that it would work out like the Declaration of Independence. And because he thought that if he could get her job back even though he broke the promise it wouldn't matter if she got her job back. But I still think that it would be to big of a risk and I think that he would’ve had to do something more than just a petition. I do think that Howie will listen this time he probably feels really bad for making miss, Gossim sad and disappointed so I don’t think he will do anything this time.

  4. I agree with Howie’s decision to make the petition because as a kid I think that would be a good way to help. It was breaking his promise but since he really likes Mrs. Gossim I think it would be worth it. Also I think Howie will not listen and try to help again because, if he didn't there wouldn't really be a story and it seems like he would do anything for Mrs. Gossim to stay.

    1. Joel, I disagree with you I think that he made the wrong choice of making the petition. I feel like he should have thought out the risks before he actually made the decision, because there were way too many risks.

  5. I disagree with Howie's decision to make the petition because he made a huge promise to Mrs. Gossim and I think Howie should keep his promises. I do not think Howie will keep this promise because he did not keep his last promise.

  6. I disagree with Howard`s decision to make the petition because he knew he was breaking a huge promise to Mrs. Gossim i don`t think Howie should even have to keep promises because they know he is going to break promise
