Week 1 Discussion Question

Denny and Howie believe that their Principal, Dr. Lomister, is a Nazi spy. What are some of the clues from Chapters 2- 4 that lead them to think this (use specific examples from the book)? Do you think he is a spy too why or why not (explain your thinking)?

Make sure to write in complete sentences using a RAD response (restate, answer, use details to support). You should use specific examples from the book. Make sure to edit your work before you post it to the site (you should type it in your 'blogging doc' first). Show me your best thinking!

  1. I believe the principal is a Nazi spy because of his suspicious actions. These actions include leaving the school after it had started. The reader would have never known he left the school if Howie was not late. Another action that makes me believe he is a Nazi spy is when the principal walks into a house that may or may not be his house. That makes me think it may be a meeting point for the principal and fellow Nazis.

    1. Very good thinking, Joel. I didn't think about the house being a meeting point for the principal and fellow Nazis.

    2. I agree he does a lot of suspicious stuff. I saw that Dr.Lomister is mean to Howie who likes the U.S. and Dr.Lomister ls on Germany's side and is always mean to Howie for that reason.

    4. I also believe that he is a Nazi spy and you made a good point about how he was acting suspiciously and leaving early. But, I don’t agree that he snuck into the building to talk to spies. We heard him talk to someone about school.

  2. I believe the principal is a Nazi spy because he does a lot of suspicious stuff and comments like.1 Dying his hair white so he wouldn't get drafted into the military because he would be fighting for the U.S. not Germany.2 He says stuff like Howie's late and gets him in trouble because Howie is suspicious of his principal.3 He is mean to anyone who likes the U.S. military because Dr.Lomister is on Germany's side in the war.

    1. I agree with every thing you said Ethan except for when he died his hair. The book said that Howie's guess was that the principal died his hair so he would not get drafted. But other then that great thinking.

  3. I do think that Howie's principal is a Nazi spy. I think this partly because of his suspicious behavior. One of the things he did was when he was ringing the doorbell he was looking back to make sure no one was watching. Secondly, because Howie climbed into the dumbwaiter that proves that he is 100% sure that he is a spy. And because in stories like this they actually are a bad guy or a Nazi spy in this case. That is why I think he is a Nazi spy.

    1. I agree James those are great theories. I totally forgot about when he looked away to make sure no one was coming. Very good James.

  4. Denny and Howie believe that Dr. Lomister is a Nazi spy because Dr. Lomister was not in school the day they saw him on the street. He was also more like a drill sergeant than a principal because he had a ton of rules. In Chapter 2, Denny and Howie also did not know why Dr. Lomister was not fighting in the war. They were surprised to see Dr. Lomister was breaking his own rule about being early to school and was in the streets. After following Dr. Lomister, Howie was thinking that he was in a spy nest because there were file cabinets and from the shows and comic books, the superheroes “always found what they called criminal-eating evidence in file cabinets”.
I think Dr. Lomister is maybe a spy because he is doing the strange things I mentioned Denny and Howie were confused about. I also think he maybe is not a spy because he couldn’t really be a spy if he got the job to be a school principal.

    1. Rory I like how you Quoted text and had a lot of detail. It made me think deeper like when you said he was a drill sergeant that made me think a lot

  5. I think that Dr. Lomister is a spy because he seems very suspicious because he left school which breaks his own rules. Howie was late for school and he saw that Dr. Lomister going into a house when he was supposed to be in school. After a few minutes Howie ran up to the door but it wouldn't budge.

    1. I agree he does a lot of suspicious stuff and is never where he is supposed to be.I also agree that he is breaking his own rules because he is supposed to be at school when he is at a house during school hours. Although he is also mean to Howie and Howie likes the U.S. and Dr.Lomister is on Germany's side.Overall you nailed that Brady!

    2. Brady, I agree with everything that you wrote about him being suspicious I also believe that he is a Nazi spy. And I didn’t think about what you said about him breaking his own rules but you are correct. If I was Howie than I would report this to one of the teachers.
