Week 5 Discussion Question

The book is called "Don't You Know There's A War On?" and this phrase is mentioned many times throughout the story. What does this saying mean? Why do so many people use it throughout the story? Why do you think it allows people to get away with so much? Make sure to use specific examples from the story to support your thinking.

Make sure to answer the question with a RAD response and use details from the text to support your answer. Please check your grammar, spelling, capitalization, and conventions before submitting your response.

  1. "Don't You Know There's A War On?" means that you shouldn’t complain for the things that you already have. And it means that there are shortages during wartime because they have to give the soldiers supplies first, an example of this is that is the ration cards that people have. So many people use it because when they do risky things like giving the petition to Mrs .Wolsh they get away with doing it because since times are hard, they try to make their life as better as can be.

  2. The saying, “Don't you know there is a war on” means something like this; the way I see it, it's used as an excuse. If someone was complaining about ration coupons or something else, and the seller says “Don't you know there is a war on?” they would zip it instantly, because if you think about it, thousands of people were dying every day. Then you think, these people need it more than me.

So many people get away with things by saying that because, it is used as an excuse. for example when Gloria said “Don't you know there is a war on” to Mrs. Wolch I think that's what changed her mind. Her son died in the war so that effected it to, but she also thought about what Gloria said as an excuse.

    2. @Joel I agree it is often times used as an excuse and it is never tolerated that someone is complaining about a ration coupon people would say, “Don’t you know there’s a war on.

  3. The saying “Don't you know there's a war on.” means that if someone says something like "Why can't we have more food" or something like that, you can say that sane to remind them there is a war on so there will not be many supplies. They have to agree. They remember they can not ask of much when there country is using money on supplies instead of more cloths or food. That is how they get away with it.

    1. Brady I agree with you about what you said I also think that “Don’t you know there’s a war on?” means you have to live through it because there are shortages during war.

  5. I think it means that you should be great full for what you have no matter what and i think it means that you should be great full for you veterans who are serving for your country. I think they use it throughout story so much because they try and get away with a lot of stuff so they can save Miss Gossim.

  6. “Don’t you know there’s a war on.” means there is a war on and you can’t get much stuff if someone complains or someone donates some war bonds and someone says, “You shouldn’t have done that!” That person could say, “Don’t you know there’s a war on.” It can also be used as an excuse like if you run out of pencils for homework and your mom asks, “Why aren’t you doing your homework?” you could say, “Don’t you know there’s a war on.” I think people get away with it so much by saying, “Don’t you know there’s a war on.” by running low on school supplies and not getting any you could say, “Don’t you know there’s a war on.” and you could get away with it. For example if you look at the book Howie says you would say “Don’t you know there’s a war on.” To help tell people there isn’t enough stuff for everyone and they need to be ok about it.

  7. I think the phrase, “ Don’t you know there’s a war on,” means that the war is happening and they are just saying that so that you know there’s a war on. It is also an excuse. It also means you shouldn’t complain for things you already have while the war is happening. People use it throughout the story because it was risky when Howie told Mrs. Wolch about the petition. It allows people to get away with it because for example, Gloria said to Mrs. Wolch, “Don’t you know there’s a war on?” That was an excuse for her to get away with it. Mrs. Wolch’s son died when the war was on.
